How Do YouTubers Get Paid?

Out of the millions of YouTubers on the platform, only a few manage to earn money or even make a living from their passion. Here’s how.

Like hundreds of millions of people around the world, you probably use the YouTube platform to watch videos of your favorite artists. You probably subscribe to several channels that allow you to follow the new creations of these people called “YouTubers”, that is to say people who produce for the platform lots of regular video content in many areas that interest you.

You should know that the vast majority of these YouTubers don’t earn money and only make videos for fun, to learn how to communicate or to try to make themselves known. Some of them manage to do so and become real YouTube “stars”. You probably know the youtuber PewDiePie who films and comments on his video game games, the fashion and beauty expert Zoella, or Marques Brownlee who get filmed while he unpacks and tests new toys. These stars have three ways to make big money on YouTube, and here’s how they do it.

You may not know it, but YouTube is owned by the company Alphabet (which owns Google) whose job is to sell advertising space for all the brands like Apple, Adidas or Sony that want to promote their products. YouTube is the second most visited website in the world. This makes it one of the biggest advertising showcases there is.

As a result, brands pay YouTube to have their own ad videos viewed right before your favorite YouTuber videos. And because YouTube needs YouTubers to create new videos, it gives them a share of the advertising money. On average, every time a video is viewed 1,000 times, the YouTuber earns about & dollar.

As you may have noticed, the YouTubers stars pages display the number of their subscribers and the number of times each video has been viewed. It shows how popular they are. As they are appreciated by many fans, brands may want to work directly with them. Brands always try to promote their products, but this time by making them appear (or pronounce) directly in the YouTubeur video. If the YouTubeur accepts, it will be rewarded in some way by the brand for the visibility it brings to the fans (with money and/or free products). This is why these YouTubers are often called “influencers”, because they have the ability to influence the buying decisions of their fans.

Finally, YouTubers sometimes take advantage of their popularity on YouTube to make money outside the platform.

As you read all these success stories, you may be thinking how easy it is to make a lot of money on YouTube. Think again! For a PewDiePie that would have made $15 million in 2016, how many millions of YouTubers will remain forever anonymous and never be able to make a living from this activity? The competition for fame is very strong and, even if you have talent to spare, it will take a lot of work and a little bit of luck to become a YouTuber star. But if this is your dream, and you’ve read this article carefully, then you’ll already know how to make money from your videos. And, of course, have fun!
