The Shanghai World University Ranking (ARWU)
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is published by Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China. Since its inception in 2003, Harvard University has consistently ranked first. Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are generally not far behind. In 2019, Harvard will once again be ahead of Stanford and Cambride in the United Kingdom.
Universities are ranked according to six criteria: the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners among alumni and professors, the number of most highly cited researchers in their discipline, the number of publications in the scientific journals Nature and Science, the number of researchers listed in the Science Citation Index-Expended (SCIE) and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and the average performance of professors.
Shanghai University Ranking 2020
Every year, the verdict of the Shanghai University Ranking is announced in the middle of August.
